This study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of a portfolio assessment in a competency-based instruction in pattern making of Garment Technology students; determine the competency level and differences of the pretest and posttest and mean gain scores between the experimental group and control group; evaluate the portfolio as to objective, content, manner of presentation and relevance.

Result showed that the pretest and posttest mean competency scores within the control group and experimental group differed significantly. The posttest mean competency scores were significantly higher than the pretest competency scores within the control group and also within the experimental group. There is no significant difference in the pretest and posttest mean competency scores between the experimental and control group in making pattern for front bodice and back bodice. There is significant difference in skills in taking body measurement, basic collar pattern and basic sleeve pattern between the experimental and control group. No significant difference was observed in the mean gain scores between the experimental and control group which implies that there is no significant advantage in the use of the portfolio assessment of a competency-based instruction in pattern making.
