500 _aThe study compared the in-vitro antibacterial efficacy of Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet Pers.) rhizome extract with the commercially available antibiotics (Penicillin G and Streptomycin) and identified the most effective concentration capable of inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC25923) and Escherichia coli (NRRL B-3709). The study was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with the following treatments: Treatment 1 Penicillin G and Streptomycin (antibiotic disc), Treatment 2-25% Shell Ginger rhizome extract, Treatment 3-50% Shell Ginger rhizome extract, Treatment 4-75% Shell Ginger rhizome extract and Treatment 5-100% Shell Ginger rhizome extract. Each treatment was replicated three times. Based on the results of the study, Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet Pers.) rhizome extract exhibited antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC25923) and Escherichia coli (NRRL B-3709). Treatment 5 (100% Shell Ginger Rhizome Extract) obtained highly significant differences among other treatments. For practical means, Shell Ginger rhizome extract could be recommended as antibacterial agent against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC25923) and Escherichia coli (NRRL B-3709) compared to that of commercially available Penicillin and Streptomycin which were much less effective and more costly.
