The study was conducted to assess the Management Practices and Technical Efficiency of the MASIPAG and Non-MASIPAG Farmers in Tumauini, Isabela.
Specifically, it aimed to; 1) Describe the demographic characteristics of the MASIPAG and Non- MASIPAG farmers; 2) Describe the management practices of MASIPAG and Non- MASIPAG farmers; 3) Determine and analyze the factors affecting their productivity and technical efficiency; 4) Determine the problems encountered by the farmers in their operation and: 5) Recommend strategies to improve the productivity and technical efficiency of the farmers.
A total of 154 respondents were interviewed, 54 MASIPAG and 90 Non-MASIPAG farmers. The result showed that the average amount of seed applied by the MASIPAG farmers were 58.13 kilograms per hectare, while non-MASIPAG farmers applied 66.84 kilograms per hectare. MASIPAG used organic fertilizer while non-MASIPAG used inorganic fertilizer. In terms of managing pest in their production, MASIPAG farmers used natural materials like FPJ, FFA, FAA while non-MASIPAG used chemicals in their operation. Using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) with a computer software Front 4.1 version using Cobb-Douglas production function, it was found out that for the MASIPAG, seeds, fertilizer, pre and post-harvest labor and capital were found to be significant indicators of technical efficiency at 1% level of significance, while for the Non-MASIPAG it was found that the amount of pesticide and capital were significant at 5% level of significance with a positive sign. Technical inefficiency model showed that age, farming system, household size, educational attainment, number of years in farming, type of soil, Crop establishment were found to be significant indicators of technical efficiency for the MASIPAG farmers, while area of farm, type of soil, nutrient management, farming system, number of training attended, seed selection and crop establishment were the indicators of technical efficiency of Non-MASIPAG farmers.
