Women's participation in the azolla program of Nueva Vizcaya/

xx, 221 leaves : , This study was conducted to describe participation of rural women in Nueva Vizcaya in the azolla program of the Province. It was also done to analyze the relationship of participation in the azolla program with the respondent's demographic, and psychological characteristics, as well as with community-related factors. A sample of seventy-one women participants/adopters of azolla technology representing the available population of about 100, who attended the trainings in the selected six municipalities of Nueva Vizcaya was drawn by purposive sampling. An interview schedule consisting of four parts was used to gather the needed information. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and multiple regression and correlation analyses. The demographic factors studied were as follows: ethnicity, religious affiliation, family income, family size, educational attainment, land tenure status, membership in organization, and working in the farm or not Psychological factors included were aside from household. The Psychological factors include were the positive and negative components of attitude such as, thoughts, feelings and behavioral tendencies. While the community related consisted of the environmental (physical and biological factors aspects of the farming system such as, distance and type of water source for the farm, location of farm, cropping pattern, combination of commodities, and project component implemented), decision-making patterns (who dominates in the farm and household), technical assistance / resource constraints (satisfaction on external services received), and socio-cultural influences (degree influence exerted to women-participants by various groups). The participation in azolla program was high, moderate, low, and very low participation. categorized into high, moderate, low, and very low participation. Statement of Hypotheses The hypotheses tested were as follows: 1. Nueva Vizcaya women's participation in meetings, trainings, workshops and other similar activities do not significantly correlate with demographic, psychological, and community-related factors and their combination. 2. Nueva Vizcaya women's participation in planning. implementation, and evaluation of azolla program do not significantly correlate with demographic, psychological, and community-related factors and their combination. 3. Nueva Vizcaya activities women's related to in participation azolla project various do not significantly correlate with demographic, psychological, and community-related factors and their combination. Findings Results showed that the respondents were predominantly Ilocano; mostly Roman Catholics; low income earners; and had a mean family size of five. Majority have relatively higher education and farm owner-operators. More than half were members of an organization in the community. They worked in the aside from household chores and other occupation. They farm also involve themselves in various activities, as partners in decision making, and helper/unpaid worker in the farm and household. They were moderately motivated in their attitude thoughts. seen in their feelings, and behavioral tendencies towards azolla technology utilization. Their farms were generally near to water source which they used for irrigation. Monocropping was often practiced, while for a multicommodity, rice fish vegetable / livestock was most acceptable. The project component mostly implemented was azolla-rice. Ordinarily, husband and wife had independent, as joint decisions in managing the farm were made relative and household. Decisions were made relative to their needs and priorities. Their first priority regarding decisions capability and need for food. Women usually influenced men mostly in deciding when to borrow money. Moderate satisfaction to services received from implementing agency/ organization (such as; capital, loan, and credit; supply of inoculum; technical assistance; information and know how; contact with change agent; incentive and/or motivation; and other support services like irrigation, infrastructure and others) was also observed. Problems on irrigation remained to be an obstacle which was a factor needed to resolve first before considering participation in the azolla program. On the whole, the rural women's participation in the azol-la program in Nueva Vizcaya was moderate. The demographic factors, specifically being minor religious group, having low a member of family income, higher educational attainment, owning the land and working in the farm were significantly related to participation in meetings and other related activities. Similarly, the same variables with the addition of having larger family size and being a member and/or leader in organization made the demographic variables significantly related to participation in various activities related to azolla project. Generally, the respondents showed high motivation towards azolla technology. Majority of the respondents were highly motivated on the positive and negative thoughts, in the positive aspect of feeling as considered aspects of well as in the positive and negative behavioral behavioral tendencies. They were, however moderately motivated in terms of the negative feelings. On the average, however, they indicated moderate degree of motivation in all aspects of their attitude, whether thoughts, feelings or behavioral tendencies. The higher their motivation, the greater their participation. Using a backward stepwise regression, Model 2 was developed to arrive at a significant relationship between the dependent (participation in planning, Implementation, and evaluation) and independent (combined demographic, psychological and community-related factors) variables. Fourteen of the 23 predictors have negative or deductive effect on the level of participation in meetings, trainings, and workshops while the nine remaining variables (i.e., having higher educational attainment, working in the farm, being highly motivated or having favorable attitude, near to source of water, farm located in the interior plain, commodity combination being rice/fish/ vegetable/livestock, and implementing agency having greater degree of influence to women) have additive effect on participation. Thirteen of the 19 predictors from Model 2 have negative or deductive effect on the level of participation in planning, implementation and evaluation while the six remaining variables (i.e., being member of an organization, having favorable attitude or being highly motivated, location of farm being on the interior plain, practicing monocropping and implementing agency /influence organization having greater degree of effect on participation. xvii, 129 leaves : , The objective of this study was to determine the factors affecting the acceptability of the Certificate of Stewardship Contract (CSC) as a Land Tenurial System (LTS) among Ayangan Ifugao farmer-recipients and determine its relationship to the demographic characteristics of the respondents such as: age, sex, marital status, family size, educational attainment, place of origin, income, membership in organization, and size of land under the Certificate of Stewardship Contract; psychological variables such as: attitude towards the implementors, perceptions, aspirations; and socio-cultural variables such as customs and traditions as well as, ancestral beliefs. Acceptability of the Certificate of Stewardship Contract as a Land Tenurial System was the dependent variable. The acceptability of the program was of two categories: acceptability of the 50-year program and acceptability of responsibilities by the farmer- recipients as stipulated in the contract. Data used in the study were obtained from 65 out of 78 Ayangan farmer-recipients of the program through an Interview schedule translated into the Ayangan dialect. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, ranges and standard deviations were used in the study. Multiple Regression Analysis was used to determine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The age of the recipients ranged from 17 to 73 years with mean of 41.86 years and standard deviation of 11.13 years. Thirty eight of the respondents were males accounting for fifty eight percent while twenty seven (27) accounted for the female group. Fifty of the recipients of the project were married while fifteen were single. Typical of mountain inhabitants, twenty seven of the respondents had low educational attainment accounting for 42%. This is closely followed by the group with medium educational attainment numbering twenty four; while fourteen had high educational attainment. Fifty three of the respondents were indigenous residents of the locality where the project were situated. Only twelve were migrants from nearby towns of Ifugao. Thirty five of the farmer-beneficiaries have low income (P10,000 and below per annum) while thirty were classified under high income earner (P10,001 and above) per annum. The findings of this study showed that the annual income ranged from P1000 to P24,000 and the computed average income was P842.21/month. belong to any existing active members of Thirty seven of the respondents did not organization while twenty eight were organization such as cooperatives operating in the area. Forty of the respondents belong to the small-land holding group who owned areas smaller than 2.42 hectares. The remaining twenty five of the recipients owned 2.43 hectares or more of land under the Certificate of Stewardship Contract. The respondents' degree of acceptability of the 50-year arrangement is between moderate and highly acceptable levels. This is manifested by the mean acceptability rating of 3.17. The standard deviation was 1.21 which indicates a relatively wide disparity on the respondent's attitude towards the land tenurial arrangement. None among the nine demographic variables significantly correlated with the degree of acceptability of the 50-year land tenurial arrangement. Only the age of the respondents showed significant correlation with the acceptability of the 50-year tenurial arrangement. The perception and aspiration of the respondents highly correlated with the acceptability of the 50-year land tenure arrangement while the attitude of the recipients did not. All the variables were found to have positive effect on the acceptability of the 50-year land tenure arrangement. The customs and traditions as well as the ancestral beliefs of the respondent's were not correlated with the acceptability of the 50-year land tenure arrangement, whether taken together (multiple) or individually (simple). Both, however, had positive effects on the degree of acceptability. Fifteen of the sixty five respondents representing 23.08% were found to have high acceptability of their responsibilities as beneficiaries of the Certificate of Stewardship Contract, twenty five representing 38.46% moderately accepted, twelve representing 18.46% fairly accepted and thirteen representing 20% have not accepted. As a whole, the respondents degree of acceptability of their responsibility is somewhere between fairly and moderately acceptable. This is manifested by the mean acceptable rating of 2.65. Using Multiple regression the nine demographic on variables, none came out to be significantly correlated with the acceptability of the responsibility of the recipients as stipulated in the Certificate of Stewardship Contract. The perception of the recipients on the project was correlated with their acceptability of their responsibility as beneficiaries of the Certificate of Stewardship Contract. Their attitudes towards the project and perceptions have no relationship with the acceptability of their responsibility. Considering the two socio-cultural variables together, the customs and traditions of the recipients were found to be significantly correlated with the acceptability of their responsibility.
