xv, 126 leaves : , Thirty-one pigs were used to determine the digestibility of rations, growth response, and carcass evaluation of swine fed with copra meal or paring meal (0, 20, 30 per cent). The pigs were penned individually and fed ad libitum. Results showed that the digestion coefficients for dry matter, crude protein, and crude fiber for starter, growing, growing-finishing, and finishing rations exhibited highly significant differences among the treatment means, except for dry matter in growing-finishing rations where differences were not significant. Crude fiber digestibility was higher in pigs given 30 per cent level than in the control pigs and those given 20 per cent level. Digestion coefficients of copra meal-fed pigs were higher than those of the paring meal-fed pigs. No apparent differences were established in digestibility values among periods. Growth performance study did not indicate significant differences among the treatments. Pigs given 30 per cent copra meal or paring meal took a little longer (8 days more) to reach 75 kilograms. The control and the 20 per cent copra meal lots gave the highest average daily gain (ADG). Pigs given the control ration were the most efficient feed converter followed, in descending order, by those fed 20 and 30 per cent copra meal. In general, pigs given higher levels of copra meal or paring meal performed comparatively equal to the control pigs. Carcass quality was not adversely affected by the inclusion of copra meal or paring meal at levels up to 30 per cent of the ration. Statistical analysis of some carcass measurements showed no significant differences among treatments. Pigs given the control ration yielded more lean and less fat than those given copra meal and paring meal. There was also an increasing score of fat firmness as the levels of copra meal and paring meal in the rations were increased. Taste panel members commented favorably on the eating quality attributes of the meat from all the treatments. Chemical analysis of some fat constants showed significant differences in saponification number of leaf fat and backfat, but no statistical differences in their acid value and iodine number. The results of shifting from rations containing copra meal or paring meal to non-copra meal or paring meal diets were inconclusive. However, unshifted animals had significantly larger loin eye area with more cooking losses and percentage drippings than shifted pigs. Likewise, in sensory evaluation, meat from the unshifted pigs was less juicy but higher in flavor than meat from the shifted animals. Fat constants were not affected by the shifting of rations. The incorporation of copra meal and paring meal at levels up to 30 per cent of the ration did not affect the performance of pigs. Growth rate, fat constants, eating quality attributes and some carcass characteristics of pigs in the copra meal and paring meal treatments were comparatively the same as those in the control. | Thesis (Master of Science - Animal Science) 28 cm..
