xvi, 54 leaves : , This study investigated the presence of beta-agonist lean enhancer and levels of residues in urine of hogs from the Slaughterhouse in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. To evaluate this, 30 urine samples measuring 5ml each were randomly collected from newly opened carcass. The samples were run through ELISA test for the detection of beta-agonist residues. Physical appearance such as meat color, muscle fiber and backfat thickness were observed in the carcass of every hog collected with urine sample. Results of the study revealed that among the 30 urine samples, 22 (73%) were positive with clenbuterol and with residues levels ranging from 200ppt (Probe Std2) to >8100ppt (Probe Std6). Two from the 22 samples have readings of >8100ppt (>Probe Std6) level of residues. The occurrence of beta-agonist in urine of hogs is highly significant (P = 0.000) This indicates that slaughtered hogs in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya were positive to beta-agonist particularly clenbuterol. The level of beta-agonist and the source of hog is insignificantly correlated ( r = 0.44, P = 0.15) However, commercially raised hogs (84%) were found to have higher residue readings compared to backyard raised and seven samples with residues levels 900->8100ppt were from commercial farms. Although the comparisons of physical appearance of meat such as color (r = 0.52, P = 0.12 ) and muscle fiber ( r = 0.16 , P =0.26) with the levels of beta-agonist residues are not significantly correlated, the backfat thickness however is highly significant (P=-0.44). Most of the hogs from Solano slaughterhouse were positive for clenbuterol. However, there is higher level of residues from commercial farms compared to backyards. This could be attributed to frequent or excessive incorporation of lean meat enhancer in feeds by commercial raisers for better economic reasons such as lesser inputs of feeds and manpower and shorter raising period and possible accessibility of the drug through distributors. An observable physical characteristic and a reliable parameter indicating the use of lean enhancer (beta-agonist) in hog is backfat thickness.
