Determinants of the nutritional status of laboratory high school freshmen of the Nueva Vizcaya State Unversity/ Wiltrudes C. Ampat - Bayombong: Nueva Vizcaya State University, 2010 - xv, 105 leaves : illustrations (some colored), photos ; 28 cm.

The study was undertaken to determine the relationship between the socio-demographic profile, the snacks type and frequency and the nutritional status of the freshmen students of Nueva Vizcaya State University Laboratory High School.

To achieve the above aims, the researcher used the structured questionnaire in gathering the data required in the study. In describing the data gathered, the study used frequency counts, percentages, means and Z-scores. In the analyses of relationships between the variables, the study used the correlation procedures. The 0.05 probability level (level of significance) was the critical point of reference for the analysis of the data. The study conducted in the Nueva Vizcaya State Laboratory School Bayombong Campus, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya with 110 freshmen students as respondents.

Majority of the respondents, were 13 years old; mostly from five nearby barrios. The predominant ethnicity of the respondents was Ilocano. There were more females than males (43%). The respondents were Roman Catholics and with an income of parents ranging from 501-6,000. Most of their parents were educated but almost half were unemployed and had 5-6 members in the family. Majority (78.2%) seldom ate snacks and those who took snacks preferred energy giving foods. Majority (91.81%) of the females have normal BMIs of 16-26. For the arm circumference measurements, of the 8 malnourished respondents (aged 12-13) identified by their BMI, only one was in agreement. Likewise, of the 8 malnourished identified in their BMI only 3 respondents were identified as above normal according to waist circumference and only 1 (11%) was in agreement with their BMI. None among the respondents were identified as above or below normal using the wrist circumference. The above findings show that anthropometric measurements for arm, waist and wrist are not in agreement with the BMI, thus could not be used to support or strengthen the results of the BMI in determining the nutritional status of the subjects.

As to the snack type, female freshmen students of the NVSU Laboratory School in Bayombong Campus indulged more on body-regulating snacks as compared to their male counterparts. Freshmen students who are Ifugaos or Igorots have significantly bigger arms and wrists than other respondents who are Ilocanos, Tagalogs and Gaddangs. Freshmen students who are older have significantly bigger wrists than younger freshmen students. Majority (78.2%) choose energy giving foods, and more than half (55.5%) of the respondents seldom ate snacks. There was no significant correlation of all the socio-demographic profile on the snack type and frequency except for gender where female snacked more on body regulating foods, As to the negative significant relationship between the body regulating foods and BMI, the result indicated that freshmen who snacked more on body regulating foods tended to have lower level of BMI. Even if they snacked more frequently, still, in their anthropometric measurements for waist only one was in agreement with their BMI. The socio-demographic profile except gender, and snack type and frequency of the respondents were found to have no significant correlation with their nutritional status based on their BMI. The above mentioned factors therefore may not be considered as determinants of the nutritional status of the Laboratory High School freshmen of NVSU.
