The study was conducted to determine the socio-demographic profile and biomedication aptitude of parents: their relationship to the morbidity rate of preschool children in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. To achieve the above aims, the study used the descriptive research method.
The study was undertaken last November 2008 to January 2009 in the selected barangays of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. There were 150 parents of preschool children that were randomly chosen from the study sites who served as the respondents for the study. The data were gathered through a validated structured questionnaire.
The study indicated that the more the number of preschool children in a family, the more frequent was the occurrence of cough in the first preschool child. The study also found out that boils and other skin diseases occur more frequently in preschool children whose parents have lower educational attainment; while parasitism was more frequent among Tagalog and Ifugao preschool children. Cough occurred more frequently in household that has more preschool children; while fever occurred more frequently among preschool children whose parents have low monthly income. Diarrhea was more common to preschool children whose parents have lower level of aptitude in the preparation of medicinal plant species, while boils/skin diseases were more common among preschool children whose parents have low level of aptitude on the awareness of medicinal plants species which were used in the study. Parasitism among preschool children was more rampant to those whose parents who have lower level of aptitude on the utilization of medicinal plants species in the study sites. Fever was more frequent among preschool children whose parents have lower level of biomedication aptitude on the awareness on medicinal plants. Likewise, the occurrence of parasitism was higher among preschool children whose parents have lower level of biomedication aptitude on the utilization of medicinal plants; while, the occurrence of other ailments was higher among preschool children whose parents have lower level of biomedication aptitude on the preparation of medicinal plants.
It is then recommended that parents should adopt health practices that could mitigate or prevent the occurrence of diarrhea, boils/skin diseases, and parasitism among their preschool children. Enhancing parents' aptitude in the preparation of medicinal plant species could help curb the occurrence of diarrhea among preschool children while improving the awareness of parents on medicinal plants species could help reduce the occurrence of fever, boils/skin diseases. Enticing parents to utilize more the medicinal plants in the study could also help curb the occurrence of parasitism and other ailments in preschool children.
