The purpose of the study is to determine the relationship of the pupil-related, teacher-related and parent-related variables and the performance of Science Grade V Pupils of Hagabag District during the School Year 1999-2000
Six hundred eighty six (686) grade V pupils from the different schools of Bagabag district were used as sample in this study 353 or 51.46% of which were male and 333 or 48.54% were female. A questionnaire was used as an instruments to gather the data for the teacher in this study: DECS Form 137-E and DECS Form 18-E were used to gather pupils' and parents' data
Frequencies, percentages and descriptive statistics were used to determine the characteristics of the subject in terms of pupil variables such as age and gender, teacher variables such as number of years in teaching elementary science, in-service training and seminars attended, and educational attainment. The t-test for one sample mean was used to find out the significance of the differences with a hypothetical value. Simple correlation analysis using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation was used to identify the variables which are significantly correlated with the performance levels. One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was utilized to find out if mean scores were significantly different among groups when the grouping variables has more than two categories or level. The results and findings were as follows:
The attendance of science teachers to in-service trainings and seminar workshops, educational attainment teaching workload of teachers, job and occupation of parents were found out to have significant difference to the performance of the grade V pupils while length of service of teachers, monthly income of parents were found out to have no significant difference to the performance level of the pupils.
Likewise, in-service trainings and workshops attended by the teacher, educational attainment of teachers and parents' job indicates that there is a significant correlation to the performance of the pupils while pupil variables such as age and gender, length of service of teacher and parents' income have no significant relationship to the pupils' performance.
On the basis of the findings and conclusions, it is recommended that elementary science teacher should consider attending appropriate trainings and seminar-workshops relevant to the subjects they are teaching and teachers should also give more attentions to male pupils when teaching.
