A total of 25 apparently healthy Philippine native dogs were used in the study to evaluate the hematology profile and gross wound healing of castration wounds applied with chayote (Sechrum edule) fruit ethanol extract (CFEE) petrolatum based ointment The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with the following treatments T1-Mupirocin, T2-no treatment, T3-Pure Petrolatum, T4- 5% CFEE petrolatum-based ointment, Ts 10% CFEE petrolatum-based ointment. The experiment was conducted at NVSU Animal Health Center Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the hematology parameters were evaluated by the Renderkit Hematology Analyzer at the Animal Life Clinic Gross wound healing was evaluated by measuring the wound contraction rate, and epithelialization period Result showed that the 5% and 10% petrolatum-based CFEE were comparable with Mupirocin in terms of wound contraction rate and epithelialization For the hematology evaluation, results showed that no significant differences were detected at days 0, 7, and 14 of the study which may have negatively affected the result of wound healing in terms of wound contraction rate and epithelialization period. Further studies are recommended to explore the potential of CFEF as a wound healing agent and its potential as alternative to commercially prepared ointments. Thesis (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)
