Phenotypic characterization of the nondescript Philippine native chicken (gallus gallus domesticus) from selected backyard farms in Dupax Del Norte, Bambang and Aritao of Nueva Vizcaya/ Mark Clinton M. Garcia Bayombong: Nueva Vizcaya State Vizcaya, 2024. xv, 65 leaves : photos ; 28 cm. The study was conducted to determine the qualitative and quantitative phenotypic characteristics of native chicken. The study was conducted in the municipalities of Aritao, Bambang and Dupax Del Norte Nueva Vizcaya, with a total sample of 450 heads. The data were collected through purposive sampling. The findings shows that there are various phenotypic traits, however particular traits both predominates in male and female. Most of the samples for the male native chicken shows a red color plumage with a plain pattern and normal feather morphology It has white skin, white shanks, red earlobes, and a red wattle, accompanied by orange eyes and the comb is of the single type. On the other hand, majority of the sample for the female shows a light brown and plain plumage with normal feather morphology. Similar to the male, it has white skin, a white shank, a red wattle, orange eyes but with a white earlobe and pea type comb. The study also characterized quantifiable phenotypic traits by measuring 11 morphometric variables such as the body weight, height, beak length, neck length, back length, body length, wingspan, chest circumference, tail length, shank length and shank diameter. On the average, the male is bigger and heavier than the female. The qualitative and quantitative traits of the native chicken in the study area does not match exactly the established breeds such as the Banaba, Boholanon, Bolinao, Camarines, Darag and Zampen.
