The study evaluated the effectiveness of applying pyroligneous acid (PA) and carrageenan plant growth promoter (CPGP) in reducing FAW infestation and yield loss in com. The experiment was laid out in a split plot arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The main plot treatments corresponded to the corn variety (IES Glut No. 4 and IES CN 9) while the sub-plot treatments corresponded to applied PA and CPGP with inorganic fertilizer (inorganic fertilizer alone, IF; PA at 200x dilution IF, PA at 300x dilution + IF; 300 ppm CPGP, 600 ppm CPGP; and PA at 250x dilution + 450 ppm CPGP + IF.
IES Glut No. 4 and IES CN 9 were similar in all measured growth and yield variables except on maturity based on days to tasseling. IES Glut No. 4 matured at 47 days after seedling emergence that was four days earlier than IES CN 9.
All measured plant growth and yield variables were significantly affected by applied PA and CPGP except the number of ears produced per plot which seemed to be a stable character of the corn plants. Applied IF alone consistently gave the lowest values of the measured variables.
Greater FAW incidence was observed during the vegetative stage of corn plants particularly during Carly whorl and late whorl stage. The same number of plants in both varieties were infested with FAW but the application of PA and CPGP, in general resulted to a significant decrease in percent infestation.
Applied PA at 250x dilution + 450 ppm CPGP IF was the most effective corn nutrition among the employed treatments in terms of enhancing growth and yield of corn as well as mitigating FAW incidence and FAW infestation.
