<subfield code="a">The study was performed to evaluate the wound healing property of Nile Tilapia Mucin Ointment (NTMO) in albino rats. Twenty-four (24) healthy two-month-old rats were used following the completely randomized design with four treatments and each treatment group was composed of six animals The following treatments were T1- No Treatment. T Nitrofurazone, T3- 7% NTMO, and T4-10% NTMO. An incision and excision were created on the dorsum of all the animals in which different medications were applied. Three parameters such as the wound contraction rate (which was observed from day one to day 23), wound epithelialization (measured on days four, eight, 12 and 16), and tensile strength measurement (performed on day nine) were determined.
Results show that 7% NTMO and 10% NTMO were comparable with the Nitrofurazone in terms of wound epithelialization rate (p < 0.003) In terms of wound contraction rate, a significant difference was observed at days four (p < 0.0004) 12 (p < 0.0001) and 16 (p < 0.007) while at day eight, the 7% NTMO showed the highest wound contraction rate of 71.66% (p< 0.0004) The Nitrofurazone, 7% NTMO, and 10% NTMO were comparable in terms of tensile strength during the measurement at day nine. Based on the results, the 7% and 10% NTMO are suitable as an alternative for Nitrofurazone. However, histological evaluation is recommended to further assess the wound healing effect of NTMO.
