TI - Improving plug transplant quality through organic substate amendments PY - 2021/// CY - Bayombong PB - Nueva Vizcaya State University N1 - The study was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of eggplant and tomato plug transplants as affected by various organic amendments and substrate volumes under Kiangan, Ifugao condition. Specifically, the study aimed to identify the optimum ratio of growing media for each crop through organic substrate amendments; to determine the optimum volume of the substrate mixture, to determine the best combination of substrate mixture and substrate volume, and to determine the interaction between the substrate ratio and substrate volume on the growth and quality of vegetable plug transplants. The study was arranged in a split-plot completely randomized design with three replications The ratio of organic substrate amendments, I part garden soil (GS) + 1 part rice straw compost (RSC) part GS + 1 part VC, 3 parts GS + 1 part VC; and 1 part GS +3 parts VC were designated as main-plot while the substrate volumes, 50 cc, 100 cc, and 150 cc, were designated as sub-plot. Based on statistical analysis, the optimum ratio of growing media for both the tomato and eggplant plug transplants is the composition of 3 parts GS + 1 part VC. It is evident that it significantly affected most of the growth and quality in terms of seedling height, stem diameter, root weight, root length, root length density, root weight density, leaf area, leaf number, percentage emergence and root to shoot ratio. The optimum volume for both the eggplant and tomato crops is 150 cc. Hence, it is concluded that the best combination among the treatments would be 150 cc of 3 parts GS + 1 part VC. On the other hand, the substrate ratio of the growing media affected the tomato plug transplants in terms of internode length, stem diameter, root weight, root length, root length density, root weight density, leaf number and true leaf emergence. With regards to the interaction of the ratio and volume of substrates, there is a varying effect on the growth and quality of eggplant plug transplants in terms of internode length, root length density, root weight density and true leaf emergence. ; Thesis (Master of Science in Crop Science - Horticulture); Includes appendices and bibliographical references ER -
