In the study, to determine the most appropriate medium for the production of quality organic vegetable seedlings, vermicompost made from combinations of locally available substrates was explored. Specifically, the study determined the physicochemical properties of the different vermicompost’s, evaluated the effects of the different vermicompost’s on the growth of plug seedlings, determined the effect of the different vermicompost’s on the production of quality seedlings, and identified which among the treatments could influence the production of quality seedlings. The study was conducted from February 2021 to April 2021 in a greenhouse situated at the College of Agriculture Experimental Area of the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), Don Mariano Perez, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.
A 1:1:1 ratio of CD+BB+IP (T1), CD+BB+KK (T2), CD+BB+RS (T3), CD+BB+WH (T4), and GS, control (T5) was used following the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) on eggplant, tomato, and pepper that were separately set-up into A, B, and C, respectively. Each treatment was replicated three times. Physicochemical analyses and tissue analyses were done by the Department of Agriculture Regional Soils Laboratory in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga Results revealed that the different vermicompost’s, especially CD+BB+IP (T1) and CD+BB+KK (T2), have greatly affected the growth parameters of the seedlings, such as the number of leaves and stem diameter of eggplant, tomato, and pepper. Also, the aforementioned treatments affected the seedling height, fresh and dry shoot, and leaf color of tomato seedlings as well as the fresh and dry shoot and total leaf area of pepper seedlings. The shoot-to-root ratio was significant in eggplant and pepper seedlings but not in tomatoes. However, on the seedling emergence time (SET), seedling emergence rate (SER), and survival percentage (SS), the results were not significant for eggplant seedlings, but in tomato seedlings, a significant difference was noted for SET and SS. Moreover, SS was greatly affected by the different vermicompost’s in pepper seedlings, but no effect was noted for SET and SER parameters. In the tissue analyses of the different seedlings, high content of N and K was noted in the seedlings grown from CD+BB+IP, P from GS (eggplant) and CD+BB+RS (tomato and pepper), and Ca from CD+BB+IP (eggplant and tomato) and CD+BB+RS (pepper).
Therefore, the production of quality organic seedlings can be improved by the combination of locally found substrates of CD+BB+IP and CD+BB+KK.
