This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella spp. in retail chicken meats collected from selected municipal public markets and supermarkets of Solano, Bayombong, and Bambang municipalities of Nueva Vizcaya Simple random sampling was used to select a total of 110 chicken meat samples from five randomly selected vendors selling chicken in the selected public markets and random selection of chicken meat parts in supermarket Conventional method was employed to isolate and identify Salmonella spp in the chicken meat samples Over-all prevalence rate of Salmonella spp. was found at 69% (76/110). The prevalence rate in public market was found at 61 8% which is significantly higher compared to supermarket at 38% (p-001) Among the three municipalities, lowest contamination rates was found in Bambang markets at 51.43% (p=0.006) Results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using Kirby Bauer Disk diffusion method revealed that all (100%) isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial tested. The highest level of resistance was observed to ampicillin at 98.98%, followed by resistance to ceftriaxone (88.16%), tetracycline (76.31%), and cefotaxime with 72.37%, while the lowest percentage resistance was observed to meropenem at 10.52%. High proportion of the resistant isolates were found to be multi-drug resistant at 85.33% (65/76) with the resistance to five classes as the most common at 32.89% (25/76), and the phenotype AMP-GEN-C-CTX-CRO-TET as the most frequent phenotype. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that public wet markets pose a significant risk for the transmission of resistant Salmonella. The study highlights the importance of monitoring and controlling Salmonella contamination in chicken meat sold in wet markets and supermarkets to ensure food safety.
