Carbon stock potential of robusta coffee (coffea canephora pierre) farms in Tabuk City, Kalinga, Philippines/ Jefferson A. Himson - Bayombong: Nueva Vizcaya State University 2019 - xv, 76 leaves ; illustrations 28 cm.

There is a growing need to develop strategies that will reduce current levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and limit future emissions. Literatures and further studies state that plants and its ecosystem can sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store in its biomass. Quantifying it through allometric equations provide more data to support the inquiries.

Tree-based land-use systems, such as the shade-grown Robusta coffee farms of Tabuk City, Kalinga Philippines, sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass. At the same time, these shade trees provide additional products and services to local residents and reduce pressure on existing forests. Therefore, increasing tree cover in coffee production is a viable option for mitigating climate change that also provides social, economic and ecological benefits.
The objective of this study is to generate aboveground carbon-stock estimates of Robusta coffee farms in Tabuk City, Kalinga, Philippines. The sites include coffee grown under shade trees. The carbon stocks of shade trees, coffee plants and leaf litter were calculated for each site.

Results of the study showed that Robusta coffee farm in Tabuk City, Kalinga, Philippines can store the amount of 193 ,13Ctha^ -1 in its aboveground biomass. The shade trees store the largest amount among the components amounting to 166.46Cth * a ^ - 1 It is followed by coffee plants which store 23.18Cth * a ^ - 1 in its biomass. Litter stores the least amount among the three components, measured 3.49Cth * a ^ - 1.

This study recommends that the shade layer in Robusta coffee farms of Tabuk City. Kalinga Philippines be made more complex for increased carbon storage and maintenance of biodiversity, as previous papers suggest. Also, Robusta coffee farms in Tabuk City can serve as carbon sink comparable to a forest due to the presence of shade trees, one of the components which give the largest contribution to carbon stock.
