It aimed to determine the response of three cabbage hybrids as influenced by different ages of plug transplant during dry season under lowland Nueva Vizcaya conditions. Specifically, the study evaluated the growth, yield, and quality performance of three cabbage hybrids as affected by different ages of plug transplant, identify the cabbage hybrid that would give the optimum yield and head quality along with the appropriate age of plug transplant, and assess the economic profitability of cabbage production using different hybrids and ages of plug transplant. The study was arranged in a split-plot randomized complete block design with three replications. The hybrids, namely, "Scorpio", "Sure ball FI', and 'Greenball FI', were designated as sub-plot while the ages of plug transplants, 3-, 4-, and 5-week-old seedlings, were designated as main-plot. The 5-week-old plug transplant used in cabbage production remarkably promoted early head formation compared to the 4-week and 3-week-old plug transplants. However, in terms of number of days to harvest, the age of plug transplant did not significantly influence the number of days to harvest. As such, the cabbages, regardless of the age of plug transplants, were ready for harvesting about 95 days after planting. On the other hand, 3-week-old seedlings gave the highest head length, head weight, yield per plot, computed yield per hectare and head volume. As to the hybrid, 'green ball F1' and 'Sure ball F1' have the highest head length of cabbage. However, 'Scorpio' formed the head earlier and gave the greatest head width, highest yield per plot, and head volume. In terms of economic profitability, 'Scorpio' cultivar using a 3-week-old plug transplant gave the highest economic return on expenses (ROE) of 153.93% or P1.53 for every peso invested in the production. Meanwhile, 'Sure ball F1' using 3-week-old plug transplant generated the lowest ROE of 134.75% or P1.34 for every peso invested in the production. Results of the study show that 'Scorpio' hybrid using 3-week-old plug transplant is best suited during dry season under lowland Nueva Vizcaya conditions, in addition, such hybrid and plug transplant age also exhibited good performance in growth, yield, quality and marketability. aThesis (Master of Science in Crop Science - Horticulture) aIncludes appendices and bibliographical references.
