TI - Hydropower energy recovery from water wheel pump: a green campus initiative for the Nueva Vizcaya State University Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya PY - 2019/// CY - Bayombong PB - Nueva Vizcaya State University Bayombong N1 - This study was undertaken to design and implement a hydro-energy recovery system for harnessing pumped water of the modified water wheel at Nueva Vizcaya State University, Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya. It evaluated the possibility of providing energy from a renewable, clean energy system to minimize pollution from non-renewable energy system. Specifically, it aimed to design and fabricate a turbine for utilizing pumped water from a modified water wheel for electricity generation, evaluate the power generated from the turbine as affected by loads (e.g., appliances) and perform economic analysis of the system. A multi-tester was used to measure the actual energy generated by the system. The hydro-energy recovery system has four major components, water tank and platform, water turbine, alternator, battery, and battery charging system. The performance of the system in producing electricity was tested. The best size of water jet was 50 mm diameter PVC that can provide more rotation of the turbine with a theoretical water power of 245.25 watts The highest load applied on the system was 265 watts and the lowest was 21 watts which were determined on variable water power of the system. The coefficient of determination, indicates that 98.62% of the variability of the voltage produced, I can be explained by the variability in the total applied load, tal. This translates to a correlation coefficient of r 0.99. Only 13.15% of voltage consumed is attributable to the total applied load. The economic analysis revealed that a payback period of the system is 2.32 years which could be attained if it is be operated continuously for 12 hours. This means that the total investment of P 68,931.00 can be recovered in that span of time. The hydro-energy recovery system is highly recommended for electricity generation by utilizing the pumped water from the modified water wheel. Additional storage tanks could be provided to maximize the operating conditions of the system. Furthermore, the system could be utilized in conjunction with irrigating crops from rivers or other flowing water whose surface elevation is lower than the area to be irrigated. In addition, a solar pump could be provided to recycle the waste water of the system.
