This study determined the relationship between academic performance in science 9 and the different factor variables such as demographic profiles, science attitude and mental ability.
This study was conducted among the 16 secondary Science 9 teachers and 289 Grade 9 student of the nine secondary schools of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. The researcher made use of combination of the descriptive-correlational and linear regression model. The descriptive part assessed the profile of the teachers and students' respondents and the levels of the student's attitudes towards science and mental ability. The correlational part determined the relationship of the profile variables (teachers and students) to the academic performance of the students. Lastly, the linear regression model has been taken to find out the relation between the performances of the students with 7 independent variables.
Descriptive-survey type of research was used involving data collection through questionnaires, testing as well as document scanning.
Data analysis used frequency count and percentage distribution, mean and standard deviations. To test the relationship among variables, correlation was used while multiple regressions determined the significant predictors or variables. Hypotheses were tested at 0.01 and 0.05 levels of significance.
Results showed that the level of the mental ability and scientific attitude of the student respondents were average and along the five scientific attitudes, critical mindedness turned to be the highest and objectivity being the lowest.
Most of the student respondents are 'Proficient in their academic performance in Science 9 for the first three quarter of the school year 2014-2015.
The academic performance of the students is not directly influenced by the teacher’s profile.
Females are performing better and students whose parents are educated are performing better than those whose parents are not educated.
Students whose mental ability are high are performing better than those who have low mental ability.
The multiple regressions showed that critical mindedness was identified as the best predictor of academic performance.
