Energy demand in the Philippines increases day by day which is anticipated that the installed power capacity in the country grows more than twofold by 2030. The study was conducted to design, fabricate a water turbine, and evaluate its performance as affected by the type of water blade (flip type and fixed type) and the height of water barrier (0.3m,0.4, and 0.5m). The design of the water turbine could address the identified problems in our country's electricity through harnessing energy at tertiary irrigation canal. The data gathered were analyzed using factorial in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and the comparison among means was tested using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) Test.
Results showed that there is a relationship between the theoretical power produced by the machine and the height of the water barrier with 613.13W and 0.4m height of water barrier, respectively. The rotational speed of the turbine was recorded at 43.26 rpm, while the actual power produced by the water turbine was 63W. Furthermore, the efficiency of the device was 12.98% and was attained at a 0.3m water barrier height.
Lastly, financial analysis showed that the device is financially viable wherein 40% of the computed annual electric bill from grid source could be lessen from using the device with a computed return on investment and payback period of 75.72% and 16 months, correspondingly.
