Prevalence of liver fluke (fasciola sp.) and other gastrointestinal parasites in goats in the province of Nueva Vizcaya/ Giovanni M. Verzosa

One hundred eighteen goats from selected nine commercial goat farms were examined for fasciolosis or liver fluke disease using flotation and sedimentation techniques with the following objectives: (1) to determine the presence of Fasciola sp. among goats raised in selected commercial goat farms in the Province of Nueva Vizcaya (2) to find out the prevalence of Fasciola sp in selected areas of the province of Nueva Vizcaya.
The prevalence of Fasciola in the places surveyed was 8 out 118 samples or 6.8%. However, aside from Fasciola there were several gastrointestinal parasites identified that include: Strongyle, Strongyloides, Monieza, Trichuris and Eimeria.
A further study in other farms and backyard raisers in the municipalities of Nueva Vizcaya is recommended, considering the areas with marshy pasture inhabited by the freshwater snail intermediate host of Fasciola sp.
