The study focused on the design, fabrication and evaluation of small scale multi-crop grater for grating of ginger, turmeric and cassava. The machine major components were hopper, grating unit, discharge chute, and power transmission assembly, and it is fabricated using locally sourced materials. Performance tests were conducted to measure grating capacity and efficiency, with different speeds applied to each crop to determine the optimal settings for effective operation.
Results showed that the highest grating capacity of 11.17 kg/hr was achieved at speed of 663 revolutions per minute for ginger while 7.40 kg/hr and 7.12 kg/hr was achieved for cassava and turmeric, respectively. The machine proved the effective in grating the crops, with slight variations in performance across different speeds.
The simple cost analysis of machine that will grate ginger, cassava and turmeric was achieve at 90.76%, 117.96%, and 192.38%, respectively. Moreover, the payback period will be achieved for 4 to 6 months. The machine was viable for grating of ginger, cassava, and turmeric.
