The lack of suitable machines for specific topographic conditions and failure to use emerging technologies significantly contribute to the decline of the country's agricultural sector. The University of the Philippines - Los Banos introduced a hand-held farm device called hand jabber made to plant seeds of various upland crops both in zero tillage and cultivated conditions. It sows seed at a rate of 0.25 hectare per day.
Influenced by these, the design of two-row okra seeder was designed and fabricated to increase its seeding capacity, field capacity, and field efficiency, the major components of the two-row okra seeder are the seed hoppers, seed tubes, seed metering devices, sowing awls, actuator bars, and linking bars, having a total weight of 4 kg. A discharge efficiency test was conducted to assess the efficiency of the seed metering device in dropping 2 to 3 seeds per pull and to finalize the adjustment of the overall design of the machine.
The best seed hopper capacity level to use, and the final testing and evaluation was determined following the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standard (PAES) method of test. The two-row okra seeder has seeding arte of 6.16 kg/ha, effective field capacity of 2.57 ha/day, and field efficiency of 98.9%. Simple cost analysis was performed to determine the cost of operation and return of investment using the device. The initial cost of investment was P1,428.00. The computed breakeven point and return on investment was 0.15 ha/yr. and 86.97%, respectively.
