This study attempted to find out the Pupils' Achievement in Science in Relation to Nutritional Status and Eco-Cultural Factors in Solano I and II Districts of Nueva Vizcaya Specifically, the study posed the following questions,

What is the distribution of pupils in terms of the following variables?


1.1 Nutritional Status

1.2 Level Automation

1.3 Nature of Home

2. What is the Achievement level of pupils in Science Categorized as O (Outstanding), VS (Very Satisfactory), S (Satisfactory), NI (Needs Improvement)?

3. Is there a significant relationship between pupils achievement in Science and the selected factors such as nutritional status, level of automation, level of superstition and nature of home.

The subject of this study were 855 pupils in Science VI both Solano I and II districts in the Division of Nueva Vizcaya during the school year 1999-2000.

The study used a correlational and comparative descriptive type of normative research and the Questionnaire- checklist as the tool to gather the data.

A teacher-made validated questionnaire prepared by the researcher was used as the main instrument which consisted of three sub-parts

The frequency count and the percentage was used to describe the general profile of the elementary Science Teachers and the Distribution of the pupils, the different level of automation, level of superstition, nature of home and nutritional status

To determine the correlation of the pupils' achievement to selected variables such as nutritional status, level of automation, level of superstition, and nature of home, the Point Biserial Correlation were used To further test its significant relationship, t used at 5% level test as

All statistical tools were treated through the aid of Special Package for Social Statistics (SPSS V6) Computer Soft Ware developed for statistical analysis Interpretation and analysis of the hypothesis were statistically tested at 5% level of significance

The following findings were obtained

1. Of the 855 pupils, 350 pupils or 64.33% fall under normal nutritional status and 305 or 36.67% more malnourished

2. There were 57 pupils under "high level of automation", under "medium level" and 437 pupils under "low level of automation",

3. There were 329 pupils or 38.48% of the 855 pupils were under "weak level of superstition"


4. Of the 855 pupils, 390 pupils live in a permissive nature of home

5 a. There is significant relationship between the nutritional status of the pupils with that performance in Science.

b. There was a slight correlation between the Science achievement of the pupil and their level of automation

c. There was a slight correlation or negligible relationship between the science achievement of the pupils and the nature of home they are living

In the light of the findings of the study, the following conclusions are advanced:

1. There is a significant difference in the distribution of pupils in Solano I and II in their nutritional status. Most of the pupils have satisfactory achievement. In Science the pupils of Solano I and II use at least average number of appliances or low level of automation.

2. Most of the pupils have satisfactory achievement in science.

a) The pupils of Solano I and II used at least average number of appliances or level of automation

b. They don't believe much in superstitious beliefs as indicated by their work level of superstition.

c. The pupils of Solano I and II live in a permissive home.

4. There is a slight correlation between the performance of the pupils in science and the three selected factors.


5. There is a significant relationship between the nutritional status of the pupils with their performance in Science.

In the light of the above findings of the study, the following recommendations were made

1. For Administrators.

To improve Science teaching, the following recommendations are offered to administrators

a. Feeding Program & other nutrition - related program should be fully implemented to attain its objectives.

b. Integration of nutrition education should be monitored by school heads in the subjects taught which to inculcate proper nutrition to the child.

c. Automated facilities in school should be provided or put in school to facilitate teaching

2. For Science Teachers

a. Conduct regularly the Height & Weight Test in order to decipher who among them need to be included in the feeding program of the school.

b. A similar questionnaire checklist should be developed by the teacher and to be conducted in his class to give him an information about the NS & Eco-cultural background of his pupils

c. The value of scientific- mindedness should be developed in the class

3. Curriculum Planners

1. Curriculum planners should make use of the data gathered to improve the science curriculum.

2. They should design a curriculum which meet the eco-cultural background of the learners.

4. For Future Researcher

The following can be concern for future researcher.

a. A similar study is recommended not only in Grade VI level also in the lover primary to have comparative study.

b. A comparative study of the factors affecting science concept should be conducted between urban and rural areas to find out if there is a great difference which served as point of study.
