Guava has received intense interest from scientists in different countries due to its role in traditional medicine in different countries Guava has been used extensively by different cultures to treat numerous diseases and has been generally consumed to improve over-all health. Clinical trials were conducted to determine the effectivity of different components of the plant The research was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective and nephroprotective properties of Native Guava (Psidium guajava Linn var native guava) Leaf Extract on CCL4-Fed White Mice (Mus musculus).

The results of this study were significant The liver and kidney collected from experimental animals in the 3 treatment groups showed significant differences in terms of the (1) organ weight, (2) grade of macroscopic or gross lesions, and (3) microscopic lesions. It shows that mice that were orally supplemented with 200 mg/kg body weight of native guava leaf extract have minimal organ enlargement, weight of the organs are within normal limits, and fewer lesions observed in terms of extent and severity when compared with the mice that were given CCl4 only. This proves that native guava leaf extract can be used as an aliment therapy to prevent liver and kidney damage in mice.
