The study was conducted to evaluate the carcass measures and meat quality of pigs fed with rations supplemented with ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC), an additive to promote growth This study used eighteen (18) pigs of 8-10 weeks of age with weights ranging from 14-22 kg The pigs were randomly distributed to three (3) treatments groups with three (3) replications and each replicate having two (2) samples. The experimental design used was complete randomized design (CRD).
Treatment I was fed without the addition of Ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) in their ration, treatment 2 was fed with the addition of 12 ppm Ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) in their ration during the finisher stage and treatment 3 was fed with the addition of 3 ppm Ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) in their ration during the starter and grower stage. The duration of feeding in each stage were 28 days After the feeding trial, animals from each group were slaughtered and were subjected to evaluation of the carcass measures and meat quality.
The average initial weights of treatment I was 18.72 kg. treatment 2 was 16 77 kg and treatment 3 was 1786 kg, respectively. The final weights before slaughter were 89.00 kg in T1 and 88 50 kg in T2 and 85 83 kg in T3, respectively The average carcass weights of T1, T2, and T3 were 66 833 kg. 66 537 kg and 64 427 kg, respectively. The average carcass recovery of T1, T2 and T3 were 75 250%, 75 183% and 75 185%, respectively.
The statistical analysis shows that there are no significant differences in all parameters. But the result of the study shows that there was a small difference in the final weight of every treatment as well as the carcass weight and carcass recovery All the treatments achieved the ideal carcass recovery of more than 70% of the live weight.
In terms of back fat thickness, there was an 8.27% reduction (2 17 cm.) on T2 and 14.69% reduction (2.30 cm.) on T3 over the control (2.54 cm.). In terms of pork color score, T2 and T3 were paler by 8.5% than the T1.
