| General note | Carrots are one of the most important vegetables in the Philippine highlands. The incredible transformation of carrots (Daucus carota) is promising because it is a crop in high demand that requires little time from seed preparation to harvesting. It grows in a variety of soil types, including sand, sandy loam, and clayey loam, and can stay in the soil for a long time after maturity if the market is not ready. Carrots are processed in a variety of ways, including dehydration, canning, and freezing, with the remainder consumed raw or cooked. Carrot production involves a number of activities, including planting, weeding. thinning, pruning, harvesting, and washing before packaging and grading to meet market demand. Among the processing activities, the first processing activity, washing, determines the final quality of the carrots consumed or sold. Washing carrots in Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal (NVAT) is labor-intensive, time-consuming, ineffective, and unsanitary because people come into contact with the dirty water used for washing. To meet the rising demand for carrots, carrot washing must be mechanized. Washing is one of the major drawbacks in carrot processing.<br/> Based on the study, the traders and some laborers prefer to have a carrot washer either a manual, pedal or motorized carrot machine that will be installed in their respective cleaning area. It is therefore recommended to design and fabricate a carrot washer for use by the farmers. The washer will be having the following major parts: drum washer, main frame and bike frame. To design a carrot washer, it must consider the following recommendations: the inside of the drum should be mated with an appropriate material to improve washing efficiency; lighter materials should be used for easy transportation; either an electric motor or a pedal-powered prime mover should be used as a prime mover so that farmers who cannot rotate the drum using a pedal can use it; and a fabrication of a water catch basin should be made. The machines requirements shall follow the PAES 232:2008 Agricultural Machinery - Multicrop Washer-Peeler - Specifications. For the testing and evaluation of the washer, it shall follow the PAES 233:2008 Agricultural Machinery-Multicrop Washer-Peeler-Methods of Test. |
