| General note | An evaluation on the efficacy of the crude leaf extract of Heartleaf hempvine (Mikania cordata) as wound antiseptic, astringent, and haemostatic was conducted using 45 heads, 2 week-old Landrace piglets. Qualitative phytochemical analysis of the crude leaf extract using the procedures of Guevarra et. al. (1985) was conducted to identify its phytoconstituents. Antimicrobial sensitivity test of the leaf extract was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer Disk Method to evaluate its activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp two common bacteria which cause wound infection.<br/><br/> The study was carried-out following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Mean comparison was done using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The different treatments are as follows: T1 - positive control (2.5 ml iodine antiseptic was applied to wounds prior to castration and another 2.5 ml was applied after castration); T2 (2.5 ml Mikania cordata leaf extract applied to wounds prior to castration and another 2.5 ml applied after castration); T3 - negative control (No application prior to and after surgical incision during castration). The study was conducted at Quirino State College Hog Farm Project at Diffun, Quirino from September 11 to October 24, 2006.<br/><br/> The conclusive findings of the study revealed no significant differences on the antiseptic and astringent effect of crude Mikania leaf extract to iodine. In terms of haemostatic effect, it was found that the crude leaf extract of Mikania is superior to that of iodine.<br/><br/> The phytochemical analysis of the crude leaf extract of Mikania cordata revealed presence of tannins, saponins and anthraquinones. Results of the antimicrobial sensitivity test revealed that Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp. bacteria are resistant against crude Mikania leaf extract. Cost comparison revealed that it is cheaper to use the crude leaf extract of Mikania compared to lodine.<br/><br/> Based on the results of the study, it can be deduced that Mikania Leaf extract can be used in place of iodine to treat castrated pig wounds.<br/> |
