| General note | This study was conducted to determine the household waste management practices in relation to the health problems of the preschool children in Nueva Vizcaya.<br/><br/> To attain the purpose of the study, a structured questionnaire was constructed and administered in the three (3) most urbanized municipalities of Nueva Vizcaya namely, Bayombong, Bambang and Solano. There were 300 households that served as respondents of the study. The data were gathered from September to November 2008 and analyzed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics<br/><br/> Findings of the study revealed that the younger respondents tend to have adopted better practices of waste processing in terms of waste reduction in the home. They were, however, observed to dump waste in the rivers and in open areas. Married individuals have adopted more appropriate and environmentally friendly disposal of biodegradable households waste such as composting and placing them in covered containers and receptacles. Respondents with higher educational attainment generated lesser biodegradable waste materials but they generated more bulky waste or used appliances/furniture. Respondents with higher monthly income generate more bulky wastes or used appliances/ furniture and they do not practice any waste reduction at home. Findings revealed that they disposed their wastes in open areas.<br/><br/> As to the effect of the waste management practices to the health problems of the preschool children, the incidence of asthma, typhoid, diarrhea, dengue and hepatitis was lessened when plastics were recycled and when strategies for household waste reduction and proper waste disposal were adopted by household members. The study also showed that households that adopted waste disposal practices and segregated solid waste in appropriate containers reduced the possibility of occurrence of malaria and weak lungs among preschool children. The more biodegradable waste the households produced, the higher is the occurrence of dysentery, respiratory disorders, allergies, parasitism and fever among the preschool children. When the respondents generated more household toxic wastes or have not adopted the proper waste processing in terms of recycling of papers there was a high occurrence of cough among preschool children.<br/> |
