| General note | This study was conducted to assess the socio-economic, health and nutritional effects of the LAKASS Program implementation in the nutritionally depressed municipality (NDM) of Alfonso Castañeda, Nueva Vizcaya.<br/><br/>A sample of 56 respondent households represented the 83 household beneficiaries in the benchmark survey.<br/><br/>Information on the socio-economic, health and nutritional conditions of the beneficiaries were availed of for the comparative assessment of the changes brought about by the implementation of the LAKASS Program activities in that municipality. The information were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics, t-test and chi-square (x) test for the socio-economic, health and nutritional changes in the houseliold beneficiaries conditions, and Multiple Regression and Correlation analysis and Pearson's Product Moment of Correlation for the relationship between the program implementation and the realized changes<br/><br/>The indicators used for the socio-economic condition of the respondents were income, type and ownership of dwelling units, bousehold appliances and livestock ownership. Health and nutritional status indicators studied were, major source of drinking water, type of toilet facilities, garbage disposal practices, morbidity and weiglit for agemeasurement of preschool children, food diversity score, and body mass index (BMI) of adults<br/><br/>Results showed that the LAKASS Program beneficiaries were of medium size family composed of live members, with female members slightly higher in number than male members. They subsist through farming irrigated lowland farms as tenant/worker or owner operator. Their education was generally low elementary undergraduates to elementary graduates.<br/><br/>The implementation of the LAKASS Program activities strongly and positively correlated with the increased income of the beneficiaries, from P14,399 to P24,337 per annum. Of the program activities, vending/livelihood activities exerted the strongest influence.<br/><br/>Though a strong and positive correlation was exerted by the implementation of the program, it did not result in charge in the ownership and type of dwelling units of the respondents. A significant increase in the ownership of inexpensive household appliances was noted which showed that the program implementation had a strong and positive correlation with the increase in inexpensive household appliances<br/><br/>There were no significant changes in the livestock ownership of the respondents were observed, as a result by the implementation of the LAKASS Program.<br/><br/>The significant and highly significant increase in the use of sanitary toilets such as water-sealed and antipolo/closed pit toilets were correlated strongly and positively to the implementation of the LAKASS Program However, the traditional garbage disposal practices of the respondents did not change. The relationship of the program implementation and this variatile is very weak.<br/><br/>The result of the study on the morbidity rate of preschool children affecting child 1 and 2 did not significantly change. Except for fever which significantly decreased, diseases which affected child 3 did not change The LAKASS Program implementation and themorbidity rates of preschoolers reflected a weak correlation. This suggests that the LAKASS Program hardly affected the health habits of the respondents<br/><br/>This points out that the LAKASS Program implementation failed to curb the high mortality rates of preschool children due to sickness<br/><br/>The average weight for age measurements of most of the preschool children did not change except for those who were less than a year old and five years of age which significantly increased. Of the LAKASS Program activities, only deworming exerted a significant, yet weak correlation, on the weight of preschoolers.<br/><br/>The body mass index (BMI) measurements of adults showed a significant decrease in underweight and a significant increase on those who were overweight mothers. The changes strongly and positively correlated with the implementation of the LAKASS Program activities |
