| General note | This study explored the relationship between critical thinking performance and perceptual learning style preferences. The study was conducted at the Nueva Vizcaya State University, Bayombong Campus during the second semester of school year 2006-2007. A total sample of 271 freshmen college students served as the respondents of the study. The researcher made used of the descriptive-correlation research method through the adapted and structured questionnaires to gather pertinent data required in the study. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The 0.05 probability level (level of significance) was the critical point of reference.<br/><br/>The result of the study indicated that college freshmen who served as respondents of the study with high performance in making inferences, making deductions, evaluating arguments, and giving interpretations are those who have garnered high scores in the college entrance test given by the University. Likewise, female college freshmen who graduated from private schools have higher performance in recognizing assumptions than other respondents of the study, whereas, female college freshmen in the study site with higher test scores also have higher level of critical thinking performance<br/><br/>On antecedents and perceptual learning style preferences, Ilocano college freshmen learn best through tactile. College freshmen with higher test scores are the combination of tactile and visual, while the major perceptual learning style preference of the respondents whose parents have high educational attainment is kinesthetic<br/><br/>On critical thinking performance and perceptual learning style preferences, college freshmen who are good in making inferences are multi-perceptual learners, college freshmen who prefer visual as their major perceptual learning style preference are good in giving interpretations, and the major perceptual learning style preference of the college freshmen who are good in making inferences is visual<br/><br/>With the above result of the study, the following recommendations are forwarded:<br/><br/>To improve the critical thinking performance of college freshmen in terms of making inferences, enhancement activities on making inferences should be focusing on the respondents who have garnered lower scores in the college entrance test given by the University. To improve the critical thinking performance of college freshmen in terms of recognizing assumptions, enhancement activities in terms of recognizing assumptions should focus more on male college freshmen who graduated from private schools.<br/><br/>Likewise, to improve the lesson absorption of Ilocano college freshmen, teaching technique that is more on hands-on experiences should be more extensively used. To improve the learning performance of college freshmen who garnered higher entrance test scores, the combination of tactile and visual perceptual learning styles should be used in the introduction of their lessons, and to improve the learning performance of college freshmen whose parents have higher educational attainment, kinesthetic or physical involvement in classroom activities should be more extensively used.<br/><br/>Moreover, the perceptual learning style that is most appropriate for college freshmen who are good in making inferences should be multi-perceptual learning styles or the combination of tactile, visual, and kinesthetic. College freshmen who are good in giving interpretations should be exposed more on the visual perceptual learning style, and the visual perceptual learning style should be used extensively in improving the overall critical thinking performance of the college freshmen of the Nueva Vizcaya State University. |
