| General note | This study was conducted to determine the factors associated with the causes of identified disciplinary problems among the high school students in Ifugao during the school year 2008-2009. There were 222 student respondents who were identified by the advisers and subject teachers, and 31 teacher respondents who were selected through purposive sampling<br/><br/>Descriptive-survey type of research was used involving data collection through questionnaire as well as document scanning with interview.<br/><br/>Data analysis used frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation and rank. To test the relationship among variables, correlation was used. Hypotheses were tested with alpha level of significance .05.<br/><br/>Among the problems encountered by the students, finances, home and family, religion, physical and health related concerns were labeled as 'not a serious problem, while academic adjustment, social and recreational activities, personal-physiological relationship and curriculum and teaching procedures were labeled as "slightly a serious problem.<br/><br/>The common offenses made by the student respondents arranged from highest to lowest are 'habitual tardiness, cutting classes and absences; "chewing/spitting betel nut';"using cell phones during class hours'; littering/loitering", "drunkenness', 'improper use of uniform and 'insubordination to authority"; "cheating', 'petty quarrels/instigating a fight" and "bringing pornographic materials' and tampering school documents".<br/><br/>On student factor, problems on finances are found to be positively correlated with age, religion, number of siblings, person staying with, and membership in a peer group; academic adjustment and on social and recreational activities are positively correlated with age and religion; personal-psychological relationship is positively correlated with age, religion, and birth order, home and family as well as physical and health related concerns are found to be positively correlated with age, religion, number of siblings; and religion is positively correlated with age and number of siblings.<br/><br/>On parent factor, the social and recreational activities and physical-health related concerns problems of the identified delinquent students negatively but significantly correlate with the educational attainment of their parents. The negative correlation coefficient implied that respondents whose parents have lower educational attainment experienced more serious problems.<br/><br/>On teacher factor, curriculum and teaching procedures negatively but significantly correlate with the educational attainment and income of teachers which implies that delinquent students whose teachers have lower educational attainment and have lower income were more likely to experience problems in curriculum and teaching procedures.<br/><br/>In view of the findings, the following are the conclusions: that older delinquent students who are Roman Catholics, with more number of brothers and sisters in the Family, who stay with both of the parents and with many members in a group tend to have more serious problem in finances; Older delinquent students who are Roman Catholics tend to have more serious problems in their academic adjustment to high school, recreational activities and social aspects; delinquent students who are the youngest in the family have more serious problems in their personal and psychological aspects, delinquent students whose parents have lower educational attainment experience more serious problems regarding social and recreational activities and physical health related concerns; delinquent students whose teachers have lower educational attainment and lower income are likely to experience problems in curriculum and teaching procedures; delinquent students whose parents are using physical punishment, not allowing their children to attend parties and giving strong admonition or sermon tend to have more serious problems; and, delinquent students whose teacher is giving low grades, strong admonition and referral to the guidance counselor or school head tend to have more serious problems.<br/><br/>In the light of the findings and conclusions of the study, the following are recommended: Strengthen Values Education and Homeroom Program in the curriculum; include lectures on information dissemination about responsible parenthood or any related topic targeting the needs and problems of the students during parent-teacher conferences; pursue staff development of teachers and encourage them to attend advance studies for the benefit of the educational system, and not only for promotion but also for enhancing the pursuit of excellence, source out more funds or devise income generating projects for the increase of salaries of teachers, voluntarily submit in the pursuance of advance studies and attendance to seminar-workshop; and investigate further about discipline of the students on a wider scope. |
