500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note This study was conducted to determine the nutritive potentials of different levels of azolla meal inclusion in the concentrate ration of goats. Specifically, it aimed to: a) determine the nutrient composition of azolla meal b) determine an evaluate the effects of azolla meal goat diets in terms of gain in body weight, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency and protein efficiency ratio and c) assess the economy of azolla meal as inclusion in the concentrate ratio of goat in terms of returns above cost of azolla meal.

Five dietary treatments were used in the feeding trial. Four levels of azolla meal (15, 20, 25 and 30%) served as components of Diets II, III, IV and V while Diet 1 was the control treatment. The dietary treatments wrer arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), replicated thrice with three heads per replication.

Dry water recovery of azolla was 5.42%. Complete proximate analysis revealed that azolla mela continued 10.6% crude protein, 90.0% fat, 23.70% fiber, 19.60% moisture, 0.50% ash, and 44.70%NFE. Energy determination revealed GE content of 2904 cal/g, while mineral analysis revealed 1.6% Ca and 0.3% P contents.

Similar initial weights of experimental goats (ranged from 18.00 to 18.67 kg) were noted indicating homogeneity which is a requirement for CRD experiment. The experimental goats were selected from considerable number of stocks base on their weight and age before these were randomly distributed to their respective treatment groups and replications. Highly significant differences on the final weights were observed. Final and average weights ranged from 22.50 to 27.67 kilogram and 3.83 to 9.00 kilogram respectively.

No significant variations were noted on the average monthly forage consumption during the feeding trial showing similar performance in this parameter. However, concentrate and azolla meal consumption of the experimental animals showed highly significant differences. Goats fed Diet V (30% AM) consumed the least concentrate feed but have eaten higher amounts of AM. Highly significant difference on the FCR was noted. Goats given Diet V (30%AM) diets performed better in terms of FCR than those in control other azolla meal-treated diets. Protein efficiency ratio of the experimental animals ranged from 1.65 to 2.81. Highly significant difference on the PER was observed among the experimental animals given the dietary treatments. Goats fed Diet V (30% AM) converted protein more efficiently than those in other treatment groups.

Return above AM cost of goats increases with the increasing percent inclusion rate of azolla meal in the diets. Final weight ranged from 22.50 to 27.67 kg. The average final gain in weight ranged from 3.83 to 9.00 kilogram. Highly significant differences on the gain in weight of goats in the different dietary treatments were observed.

Experimental animals fed with 0% azolla meal gave the lowest return above azolla meal cost. Experimental animals given the 30%azolla meal (Treatment V) incurred the highest return above azolla meal cost which translated to better returns when compared to goats fed with the other treatment diets.
With all these findings and information, it could be deduced azolla meal could be safely incorporated in the diets of goats as high as 30 percent.
