| General note | This study identified the hotspot of earthquake occurrences in the province of Nueva Vizcaya along with describing the level of awareness and preparedness of the community in the identified hotspot areas. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count was utilized to determine the number of earthquake occurrences in each municipality of the province. Furthermore, frequency count was also used in describing the awareness and preparedness of the residents in the hotspot areas. Analysis of the data for identifying the hotspot areas, the Moran's I and Getis Ord-Gi from GIS were used.<br/><br/>Results showed that the highest frequency count in earthquake occurrences are in the municipality of Kayapa. Meanwhile, no recorded earthquake occurrences based on epicenter was observed in the municipality of Villaverde. In addition, spatial clustered patterns existed and were not attributed to random chance at the north-westward part of the province. Hotspot areas were identified in the municipalities of Ambaguio, Bayombong. Bambang, and Kayapa. There is 99% confidence that these earthquake occurrences were identified at these municipalities. Furthermore, survey was conducted on the hotspot areas wherein 42% assumed that earthquake is associated with climate change and 76% thought it was due to volcanic eruption. Meanwhile, only 54% of the respondents knew the emergency/hotline numbers of the local fire, police, and hospital department and also the barangay staff. In addition, 49% of them had their furniture mounted to the wall or floor. The study showed that the residents in the hotspot areas are very aware and very prepared when it comes to earthquake.<br/>Moreover, a crafted earthquake mitigation plan for Nueva Vizcaya is recommended for implementation. It is coined as "Project EM - Educating the community & Materials for Awareness and Preparedness for Earthquake". This study is aimed at strengthening earthquake prevention, mitigation and preparedness which are the key strategies to address the vulnerability of the communities.<br/><br/>Keywords: Magnitude, Hotspots, Mitigation Plan, Spatial Analysis, Clustered Patterns<br/> |
