500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note The study was primarily undertaken to developed and evaluate the performance of water filtration system for treating and improving river water quality. Specifically, it sought: (a) to develop a water filtration system utilizing coconut shell charcoal, carbonized rice hull, wood charcoal, sand, and gravel, (b) to determine the water contaminant difference before and after passing through the filtration system; (c) to determine the removal efficiency of the various filter media considering total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids (TDS), and turbidity concentration.

Results revealed that all the treatments applied in the study (wood charcoal, coconut shell charcoal, carbonized rice hull, and the charcoal combination) are efficient in total coliform bacteria removal in water. However, coconut shell charcoal filter gave the highest removal rate of 90% For the nitrate removal, the wood charcoal filter and coconut shell charcoal filter were found to be 43% efficient while the other treatments were found to be inefficient. For the total dissolved solid (TDS), all the treatments ineffectively reduced the TDS concentration of the river water indicated by the increased in TDS after passing through the filters. For turbidity removal, all the treatments applied (wood charcoal, coconut shell charcoal, carbonized rice hull, combination of charcoal) are efficient, having a removal rate of 96.74%, 93.00%, 87.53%, and 91.58% respectively. However, among these four treatments studied, wood charcoal gave the best performance for turbidity removal.
Furthermore, all of the parameters that were used for the evaluation of the filtration system except for the total coliform bacteria passed the permissible limits set by government authorities on the usage of fresh water for livestock drinking.
