| General note | The study was conducted to evaluate the growth performance, cost effectiveness and effect to the intestinal villi growth of using locally produced probiotics. Colony forming unit (CFU) of the locally produced probiotic was also determined. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with the following treatments: T1-20% liquid content of rice porridge fermented with Lactobacillus casei, T2-30% liquid content of rice porridge fermented with Lactobacillus casei, T3- Negative Control- pure water and 14- Positive Control- commercially available growth promoter Grand Humivet. A total of one hundred twenty (120) straight run Kabir chicks were used; each treatment had three replicates with ten (10) experimental units. <br/><br/>The result of the study showed that the final mean weight is highest in T4 with 23,150 grams followed by T2, T1 and T3 with 22,900, 22,100 and 18033.33 grams respectively. In terms of ADG, T4 turned out to have the highest ADG with 262.5000 grams followed by T2 (262.4967 grams), T1 (220.8333 grams), then T3 (198.6133 grams). The study also revealed that in terms of cost effectiveness measured through FCR and ROI. For FCR, T4 (2.2936) has the least feed conversion but is statistically comparable to T2 (2.3234) followed by T1 (2.4188) then T3 (3.0756) having the highest feed conversion. In terms of ROI, T2 has the highest with 49.18% followed by T4 (48.42%), T1 (46%), T4 (41%). <br/><br/>Histopathological samples were taken from the three segments of the assessment of the intestinal villi growth. The effect was differentiated by the measurement of the villi length as per intestinal segment. In the duodenum, T4 has the longest with 936.53mu x m then followed by T1(833.51 µm) T 3(828.01 µm) then T2 (719.46 µm). In the jejunum, T4 has the longest with 1, 271 µm followed by T1 with 1, 251.83 µm then T3 with 1, 100.98 µm and lastly T2 with 1045.33 µm. In the ileum, T3 (859.15 µm) has the longest villi length then T 2(719.62 µm) T1 (711.86 µm), T 4 (602.6 µm).<br/> |
