Antibacterial efficacy of ampalaya (momordica charantia lion.) leaf extract against staphyloccus aureus (ATCC 25923) and escherichia coli (NRRL B-3709)/ George Yves T. Esposo

The study compared the antibacterial efficacy of Ampalaya leaf extract with commercially available antibiotics (Penicillin G and Streptomycin) and identified the most effective concentration capable of inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
The study was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with the following treatments: Treatment 1 Penicillin G and Streptomycin (antibiotic disc), Treatment 2-25% Ampalaya leaf extract, Treatment 3-50% Ampalaya leaf extract, Treatment 4-75% Ampalaya leaf extract and Treatment 5-100% Ampalaya leaf extract. Each treatment was replicated three times.
The results of the study revealed that different concentrations of Ampalaya (Momordica charantia) leaf extract exhibited antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus but not with Escherichia coli. Treatment 1 (control antibiotics) obtained highly significant differences among other treatments. For practical means, Ampalaya leaf extract could be recommended as antibacterial agent against Staphylococcus aureus but the commercially available Penicillin and Streptomycin were more effective.
