The study aimed at evaluating the solar-powered egg incubator in terms of temperature, humidity, egg turning capacity, energy consumption, and hatchability efficiency. The developed incubator major components composed of incubating unit, automatic thermostat, two automatic egg turners and a solar power source.
The developed egg incubator was powered by solar all through out the 21 days required duration. A 100 watts solar panel and a 500 watts inverter were used as power source. Four incandescent bulbs, 25 watts each were utilized as heater inside the incubator. Two egg tumers were also used with 30 chicken eggs capacity per egg turner.
Findings of the study revealed that the recorded mean temperature inside the incubation chamber was 35.68 °C which is within the standard required temperature of 35°C-40°C. Whereas, the average humidity recorded was 51.92%, 5.6% lower than the minimum required humidity of 58-65%. 17 out of the 60 incubated chicken eggs or 56% were fully developed but not hatched. Cost of bill of materials in developing the solar-powered egg incubator amounted to P12,805.00, which is lower than the egg incubator commercially available in the market. The developed solar-powered egg incubator energy consumption resulted to 1.8 watt at 90 minutes full operation.
