Hybrid guava leaf extract (HGLE) at 200 mg/kg was tested in alloxan-induced diabetic white mice with the following objectives (1) investigate and compare the hypoglycemic effect of HGLE and commercially-available hypoglycemic drug (insulin), (2) determine and compare non-fasting blood sugar (NFBS) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels of alloxan-induced diabetic white mice treated with HGLE and commercially available hypoglycemic drug (insulin) and (3) compare the effect of different treatments on the blood glucose levels of male and female diabetic white mice.
The experiment was laid out following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with subsamples and with the following treatments Treatment 1 No medication given (Negative Control), Treatment 2 Insulin (Positive Control) and Treatment 3 - Hybrid Guava Leaf Extract. Each treatment was replicated 3 times, and each replicate has 6 experimental mice (3 males and 3 females) with a total of 54 diabetic mice used in the study.
Based on the result of this study, hybrid guava leaf extract at 200 mg/kg showed hypoglycemic effect on alloxan-induced diabetic white mice with NFBS and FBS levels both reduced. Differences between the final and initial NFBS and FBS concentration among treatment groups revealed a significant amount of blood glucose reduction in HGLE that is comparable to commercially available hypoglycemic drug insulin. Moreover, in female mice, HGLE and insulin treatment significantly lowered the blood sugar concentration with levels comparable with each other. Since HGLE has comparable hypoglycemic activity with insulin, it can be considered as a potential alternative for the treatment and management of diabetes.
