Guava is a popular plant in the Philippines not only because it is seen growing in backyards but also because it is an indispensable part of traditional medicine due to its wide array of pharmacologic activity, notable of which is its hypoglycemic effect attributed to different components of the plant This study investigated the hypoglycemic effect of chloroform extract of native guava (Psidium guajava Linn var native guava) leaves (NGLE) on the non-fasting and fasting blood sugar of diabetic white mice Intraperitoneal administration of native guava leaf extract with a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight showed significant reduction of non-fasting blood Sugar (NFBS) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels with normoglycemia established for both after one week of NGLE administration. The mean blood glucose levels for male and female diabetic mice administered with NGLE showed significant differences with the negative and positive control groups. Normoglycemia was attained by female mice after one (1) week of NGLE administration and male diabetic mice showed 48% reduction in the mean blood glucose levels No significant increase in weight was observed in all diabetic male and female mice after one week of treatment. This experiment provided evidence to support the hypoglycemic activity of native guava leaf extract, and the potential use of native guava leaves as aliment therapy of diabetes in mice.
